Civil engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the development, design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineers are responsible for providing the foundational infrastructure that’s necessary to support human civilisation; this work often goes under-appreciated or unnoticed by most people outside the profession. If you are looking to find civil engineering in North Wales, why not take a look at the work of companies such as Alwyn Jones LTD
There have been some incredible examples of civil engineering projects over time, here is a list gathered of some of the most impressive civil engineering projects which have taken place all over the world.
1)The Hoover Dam
Built in 1936, using tens of thousands of workers and hundreds of contractors, it’s one of America’s stand out Civil engineering projects. At 726 feet tall and 1,244 feet long at its crest, Hoover Dam was constructed with 56 million tons of concrete.
2) The Panama Canal
This is one of the most impressive civil engineering projects in history and remains one of the most important shipping routes to this day. Starting construction in 1904, it took 20 years to complete; 23,000 workers died during its construction.
3) The Golden Gate Bridge
San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is one of America’s most recognisable civil engineering structures, and a symbol of civic pride for many in California. When it was completed in 1937, it was considered to be one of largest and most expensive projects in American history. It took civil engineers nearly four years to build at a cost of $35 million.
4) The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System
In 1971, civil engineers began working on one of their most monumental projects—the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. This series of steel pipes transports crude oil nearly 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, Alaska. It is still considered one of today’s most important civil engineering achievements.
5) The CN Tower
Another incredible civil engineering project was the construction of The CN Tower in Canada. At over 1,815 feet (553 meters) tall, it’s North America’s tallest freestanding structure and also one of its most distinctive landmarks. Located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, visitors can climb up to an observation deck on its main pod for spectacular views of Canada and Lake Ontario.
6) The Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel, more commonly known as the Chunnel is a 50-mile (80km) long undersea rail tunnel between England and France that was opened on May 6, 1994. It was constructed by a group of civil engineering contractors including Bechtel, France’s SNCF, Germany’s Deutsche Bahn AG, Spain’s Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV), and Balfour Beatty.
7) Burj Khalifa
Located in Dubai, UAE, Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. At 829.8 meters (2,722 feet), it was an incredibly challenging structure to build; with a team of civil engineering contractors and companies working together to build it to completion. A testament to human ingenuity, its construction even served as a secondary motivation for another amazing engineering project: sending a man into space!
8) The Brooklyn Bridge
Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of New York City’s most famous structures and one of its busiest. Designed by engineer John Roebling (who tragically died before it was completed), the bridge consists of two towers that rise gracefully from their bases on either side of Lower Manhattan to anchor a suspension cable system high above the East River.
9) The Three Gorges Dam
Located on China’s Yangtze River, in Hubei province, it is one of largest hydroelectric power stations in terms of installed capacity and also has a number of other purposes. These include flood control, river navigation, irrigation and prevention of seawater intrusion into upstream river deltas. The Three Georges Dam is another fine example of complex civil engineering.
10) Statue of Liberty
Built in 1886 and dedicated in October 28, 1886, it was designated as a National Monument on October 15, 1924. It is situated on Liberty Island, New York Harbor and welcomes approximately 3 million visitors each year. Considered one of America’s most important historical monuments and symbolizing freedom to many immigrants, the Statue of Liberty is an iconic civil engineering structure that has defined New York for over 130 years.
